New Orleans Family Has Son’s Body in Front of TV Playing Video Game During Memorial Service

A New Orleans family chose a very unique way to remember their loved one at his wake.

18-year-old Renard Matthews was killed late last month (Tues, Jun. 26) during a shooting in his neighborhood. He had been walking his new dog when he was fatally shot in the head and his cellphone was taken, his aunt said.

For his wake at the Charbonnet Labat Glapion funeral home in New Orleans’ Tremé neighborhood last Sunday (Jul. 8), Matthews’ family decided to mourn him in the same way he lived his life.

The teen’s body was placed upright in a chair, with his hands holding a PlayStation 4 controller, surrounded by some of his favorite snacks, with his beloved Boston Celtics playing on NBA2K on a TV screen in front of him. He was wearing Celtics star Kyrie Irving’s #11 jersey, black pants, green socks with Irving’s face on them and black Nike slides. Matthews’ mother Tameka said her son was a homebody and a big fan of Kyrie Irving.

While this is certainly a rather “different” way to commemorate a loved one, you have to give Matthews’ family some originality points. While strange, it also probably helped lighten the burden of losing him, as seeing him in a casket would have likely been hard on the family, especially considering how young he was.

Renard Matthews’ funeral and burial were held two days after his wake, on Tuesday, July 10th.

XXXTentacion Laid to Rest in Private Funeral Service Attended by Friends & Family

XXXTentacion’s friends and family said their finals goodbyes to the rapper Thursday during a private funeral service in Florida.

Unlike the public memorial service that was attended by fans the day before, Thursday’s service was just for the “SAD!” rapper’s close friends and family. Among those in attendance included Erykah Badu and “Cash Me Ousside Girl” Danielle Bregoli (also known by her rap name Bhad Bhabie).

“LONG LIVE XXX,” Badu wrote along with a heart emoji while showing the funeral program. “‘They may try to erase your face But millions spring up in your place.’ -e.b.”

Bregoli, who made headlines last week after she broke down crying while talking to TMZ about her late friend, apparently took the service pretty hard. “Out of this short 15 years I’ve been alive watching that casket close today was the hardest thing I have ever had to watch,” she wrote on Snapchat. “I finally feel a little better that I got to say goodbye and tell you I love you for the last time.”

Nima Etminan, Vice President of EMPIRE, the record label XXX was signed to, recalled a quote the rapper’s great-grandmother said during the private funeral service. “In life, you can wait for storms to pass, or instead you can learn to dance in the rain,” she shared with the crowd. “Jah danced in the rain.”

XXXTentacion’s mom, Cleopatra Bernard, also posted about her son’s funeral on Instagram. “Goodbye my love, until we meet again,” she wrote.

The day before the private service, XXX was memorialized in a 6-hour open casket public service attended by thousands of his biggest fans at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida.

According to reports, mourners traveled from all over the country to pay their last respects to the rapper (real name: Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy) who was shot and killed last Monday in Deerfield Beach. The turnout was so large that many people opted to arrive as early as 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, about five hours before doors opened. Many were pictured breaking down in tears.

A number of celebrities were spotted at the public service, including rappers Lil Uzi Vert, PNB Rock, Lil Yachty and more. During the memorial, DJ Scheme, XXX’s producer and personal DJ, played the rapper’s music, and in between tracks, fans were treated to motivational words from his past viral videos.

A video montage of his performances played on two giant screens on the stage and the scoreboard in the middle of the arena. Two large photos of the rapper were placed on each end of the stage where his casket was.

“It was the most perfect thing for Jah,” Scheme told Billboard. “It described everything he was perfectly. These fans are our family so it’s nothing to show them his body. He would want that. I promise Jah was looking down at that event today with a huge smile.”

Cameras and cell phones were not allowed into the building, but those who attended were able to describe what XXX was wearing in his casket—a denim button down jacket and burgundy pants, with his signature locks braided.

Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty stood by the casket with X’s mother, who would periodically pause the line so that X’s famous friends could hav their own time with them. Ugly God was “visibly heartbroken” as he walked up to the casket and eventually became “inconsolable,” according to Billboard.

Tiurakh$ushii—a rapper form Lauderhill, FL and childhood friend of X—spoke to reporters outside the venue, saying that he didn’t want to in and look at his friend inside his casket. “I don’t want to see my boy like that,” he told the Sun-Sentinel.

Brett Clarkson, a reporter for the Sun-Sentinel, described the scene in vivid detail via Twitter:

Clarkson also posted a number of photos from outside the BB&T Center:

The official video for XXXTentacion’s single “SAD!” was released Thursday morning. The video, written and creative directed by X, shows him attending his own funeral and fighting with his resurrected body. The song recently became the first posthumous No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 for a lead solo artist since The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo Money Mo Problems” in 1997.

Of the three men allegedly responsible for XXXTentacion’s shooting death, one was arrested last Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder. Dedrick Williams is being held in the Broward County Jail without bond, while his accomplices have warrants out for their arrest.

Rapper’s Public Memorial Service Will Be Open Casket

A public memorial service for XXXTentacion is scheduled for Wednesday, June 27th, 2018, and, in addition to relatives and close friends, friends are invited to attend the funeral. To accommodate the expected huge turnout, XXX’s funeral will be held at the BB&T center—a 20,000-seat arena in Sunrise, Florida.

According to the late rapper’s attorney, J. David Bogenschutz, the service will include an open-asking viewing. However, cell phones and cameras will be prohibited at the event, according to a flyer announcing the memorial on his Instagram page. Admission is free.

“Come say your final goodbye on Wednesday, June 27th, 2018 at Florida Panther’s Stadium from 12pm to 6pm,” reads the flyer. “No cellular devices or cameras will be allowed. Please leave them at home or in your vehicle. Any person found with any device of the sort will be immediately turned around at [the] gate or escorted out and will not be allowed back on the premises.”

The no cell phone policy is likely a reaction to the videos floating around the internet showing XXXTentacion lifeless with no pulse right after he was shot in his vehicle.

20-year-old XXXTentacion, whose real name was Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy, was gunned down last Monday afternoon (Jun. 18) while leaving a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida. According to eyewitnesses, he was shot in the neck and died instantly at the scene. The incident report states there was a brief struggle between XXX and his shooter before he was killed.

One of XXX’s suspected killers—22-year-old Dedrick D. Williams, who reportedly stalked the rapper and waited for him to leave before robbing and shooting him— was arrested two days later and was charged with first-degree murder. He’s being held at the Broward County jail with no bond. His accomplices, two other men, have warrants out for their arrest and are still at large.

XXX’s death has resulted in increasing streaming numbers for the late artist. The day after his death, his song “SAD!”—a single from his latest album ?—broke the Spotify record for most single-day global streams, which was previously held by Taylor Swift. Today, Billboard reported that the song had skyrocketed from No. 52 to No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart.

X’s mother, Cleopatra Bernard, announced last week that he was expecting a child with his girlfriend. The baby is due before the end of the year.

XXXTentacion also reportedly took good care of his family just months before he was murdered. According to TMZ, he spent close to $2 million buying four houses for several close family members

XXXTentacion’s Family Scared to Have Funeral Because They Think Someone Will Shoot It Up (Report)

XXXTentacion’s family doesn’t want to have a funeral for him because they’re afraid someone will “shoot up the place,” Radar Online reports.

According to sources close to XXX’s family, the rapper’s relatives are begging his mother, Cleopatra Bernard, to cremate him instead of having a funeral because they fear the service “would turn into yet another crime scene.”

“His mother wants a funeral Opens a New Window. because that’s what he would have wanted,” the insider told Radar. “But other people in his family don’t want that at all because they don’t know if someone’s out there plotting to fire shots.”

“They’re also worried his fans are going to show up and possibly get too rowdy,” the source added. “His mom’s set on a funeral and wants all this violence to stop. She’s still grieving and trying to come to terms that her son’s dead.”

22-year-old South Florida tattoo artist Dedrick Williams was arrested Wednesday (Jun. 20) for his alleged involvement in XXXTentacion’s shooting death Monday afternoon in Deerfield Beach. Williams was charged with first-degree murder and was not given a bond. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said they were “seeking additional suspects” still at large.

XXX’s mother said his girlfriend was pregnant with his child before he was killed. She shared a photo of a sonogram along with the caption: “He left us a gift.” The ultrasound was taken on April 23rd, 2018 at 8 weeks, 3 days, which means the baby’s mother should be about 16 weeks (or four months) along by now.
